What are resource centers and what else will they do?

These are institutions that parents of children aged 2 to 18 can address for a comprehensive assessment of the child, identification of their special educational needs, and the development of an individual development program (with all the recommendations regarding the particularities of the training) and receive correction and rehabilitation services.

Centers are created by decisions of local governments, taking into account the needs of the community’s children at the rate of 1 center for 7 thousand children living in the united territorial community or district, and no more than 12 thousand children living in the city or district of the city.

At the same time, it is about all children living in a certain territory, and not only children with developmental disabilities or with disabilities.

What do you need to have an inclusive class open at school?

To open an inclusive class, parents must apply to the school principal for an appropriate application. The head of the school will agree to open such a class with the local district education department and issue an order.

However, if this is a school that does not yet have inclusive education, we recommend you go to school in advance – even before the first-class recruitment is announced. This is necessary so that the administration and teachers know that in the next school year they will need to admit a student with special educational needs and have been trained to make your child’s school more comfortable.

First of all, if the child needs this, the school needs to take care of additional teaching materials (for example, Braille books) that need to be ordered in advance. In addition, if the school needs to improve architectural accessibility (for example, to make ramps), the school director will have time to send budget requests, find grants, sponsors or philanthropists.

If parents do not want the child to attend school?

Today, in the structure of general secondary education there are several options, as children with special educational needs can get general secondary education. These are general education schools with inclusive and special classes, special schools, educational and rehabilitation centers.

In addition, there is an individual form of training. It is used for students who can not be trained in a group for students who can not attend an educational institution due to their health status, those who can not attend school (non-controlled area, emergency areas) due to territorial disposition, as well as for foreigners who live in places of temporary stay of foreigners and stateless persons (in accordance with the Order of the Ministry of Education and Science No. 8 dated January 12, 206).

For children with a disability or those who can not attend school because of their physical condition (or need long medical treatment in medical institutions), transfer to an individual form is carried out by the decision of the medical advisory commission. Thus, this form of training is rather an exception, since it is applied strictly by the decision of the relevant specialists.

Also, the law “On Education” left the external system and introduced the family form of education. They can also be applied in the case of teaching children with special educational needs. However, we emphasize that the choice of form of education should be balanced and take into account, first and foremost, the interests of the child.

For this, parents need to listen to the recommendations of doctors, educators and social workers. If specialists deny the opportunity to study at school (and even more so – if advised), it is better to give the child such an opportunity. After all, she needs to learn to live in society.
